Biathlon at Milano Cortina 2026: Events, Venue & Competition Guide
Complete guide to all 11 biathlon events at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Anterselva/Antholz, featuring sprint, pursuit, mass start, and relay.
Overview
Biathlon merges the endurance demands of cross-country skiing with the precision and composure of rifle marksmanship. At Milano Cortina 2026, 11 medal events take place at one of the finest biathlon venues in the world: the Südtirol Arena in Anterselva (known as Antholz in German), located in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy.
Venue: Südtirol Arena, Anterselva/Antholz
Sitting at approximately 1,600 metres above sea level in the Antholz valley, the Südtirol Arena is a proven world-class facility. It has hosted the IBU Biathlon World Cup annually for decades and staged the IBU World Championships in 2007 and 2020. The venue offers a purpose-built shooting range with 30 lanes, modern electronic target systems, and a spectator stadium with a capacity of around 20,000.
The course loops wind through the valley floor and surrounding forest, with enough elevation change to challenge even the fittest athletes. Cold, stable conditions in the Antholz valley generally produce fast tracks and favourable shooting conditions, though wind in the shooting range can still play a decisive role.

Sprint
The sprint is the gateway event of the biathlon programme. Athletes start at intervals and ski the course with two shooting stages — one prone, one standing. Each missed target incurs a 150-metre penalty loop. The sprint results also set the start order for the pursuit.
Pursuit
In the pursuit, athletes start according to their sprint finishing times, so the first across the line wins. Four shooting stages (two prone, two standing) create opportunities for dramatic lead changes. A clean shooter can erase a significant time deficit, while missed shots send leaders into penalty loops as rivals close in.
Individual
The individual is the classic biathlon event and the most punishing for missed shots. Each missed target adds one full minute to the athlete's time rather than a penalty loop. With four shooting stages across the longest race distance, the individual demands perfect composure. A single miss can drop an athlete from gold to off the podium.
Mass Start
The top 30 athletes in the current World Cup standings start together. Four shooting stages punctuate the race, and the pack dynamics of mass start skiing combine with the pressure of shooting alongside direct rivals. The mass start often produces the most exciting biathlon races of the Games.
Relay
Each nation fields four athletes who each ski a leg with two shooting stages. In relay format, athletes receive three spare rounds per shooting stage, which they must load individually. Missing after all eight shots results in a penalty loop. The relay is a source of immense national pride and one of the most anticipated biathlon events at every Olympics.
Mixed Relay
The mixed relay features two women skiing the opening legs followed by two men. The shorter format and combined-gender structure make it a fast, exciting event that often comes down to the final shooting stage.
Key Athletes
Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe enters Milano Cortina 2026 as the dominant male biathlete of his generation, with multiple Olympic gold medals and World Championship titles to his name. France, Sweden, and Germany field consistently strong teams across all events. On the women's side, watch for contenders from France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, where the depth of talent is remarkable.
The Anterselva Advantage
Italian biathlon fans have long packed the Anterselva stadium for World Cup events, creating one of the most electric atmospheres in winter sports. That home crowd energy, amplified by Olympic stakes, should make the Südtirol Arena one of the standout venues of Milano Cortina 2026.
